Why the Sealing Face is the Core of Joint Integrity
A flange connection is a dynamic mechanical system. The bolts apply tension, the gasket provides the seal, and the flange faces transfer that compressive load. If the sealing face type does not match the process fluid, pressure class, and gasket material, the joint will eventually fail due to creep relaxation or uneven compression.
Two key factors define a sealing face's performance:

Surface Finish (Ra/AARH): The texture of the flange face—usually measured in AARH (Arithmetic Average Roughness Height)—must literally "bite" into the gasket to prevent lateral movement. A finish that is too smooth will cause the gasket to slip under pressure; a finish that is too rough will prevent proper seating.

Load Concentration: Different faces concentrate the bolt load differently. For instance, a Flat Face (FF) spreads the load across the entire surface, while a Raised Face (RF) concentrates it near the bore, creating a significantly higher specific sealing pressure.

When purchasing or specifying flanges, ignoring the sealing face leads to three major pipeline disasters:
